Welcome to English essay 2019

What is this?
English Essay 2019 is the first annual competition in essay-writing in English language for secondary school students in Slovakia. The competition is a little brother (or sister) to a much larger project, called Esej. This project aims to make essay-writing part of normal, everyday practice in Slovak schools.
How do I take part?

Why do I take part

There are two reasons. One is… prizes! Of course. They are quite attractive:
  • 1st place: credit card worth 100 euro for shopping at Eurovea Shopping City
  • 2nd place: credit card worth 80 euro for shopping at Eurovea Shopping City
  • 3rd place: credit card worth ? euro for shopping at Eurovea Shopping City  
The other reason, however, is simply because writing is fun! It should be! We hope that you will enjoy writing your essay. And we can promise we are looking forward to reading it!

About essay writing

In some countries, essay writing is a very common part of school life. Think of all the advantages! Instead of sitting a test or answering questions in front of the clasroom you could analyze a topic (a history or literature question, but even something from geography or biology) by writing about it!

How to submit & judges

You must submit your story via email to submissions@essayslovakia.com. The deadline is June 15, midnight. You will receive a notification that we have received your submission.
 
The jury will be chaired by Juraj Draxler.

Love stories loved by our judges

” One of my all time favourite love stories is The Last of the Belles by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. It is a tender, melancholy story about love never fulfilled. Set in the South of the United States in early 20th century, it describes the protagonist falling in love with the beauty of his home town. She has feelings for him, but only as a friend and trusted companion. As time passes, he observes her life and her love interests, sometimes up close, sometimes he just hears rumours when he is away. Until he finally comes to visit his home town one last time and realizes their love will always be unfulfilled and he will probably never see her again. This all happens against the background of disintegrating quasi-aristocratic culture of formerly wealthy plantation owners in the deep South  It is as much a love story as a wonderful description of times forever lost, painfully etched in one’s memory. “
