The essay

Write an essay, in English language, of course. The length should be 1500-2000 words.

The topic

The topic of this year’s essay competition is ‘My favourite literary love story’. Yes, it’s spring, the time of love, and that is why we chose this topic.

Where do I start?

Think of a piece of written fiction (a poem, a short story, a novel) that contains a love story. The love story can be tragic, it can be humorous, it can be an old story or a modern one. But the subject should be love.

How do I write?

Write an essay explaining why you think this piece of fiction makes a great love story. Write also a little bit about the context of the story (for example, the historical period the story is set in) and about the author. There can  be many reasons why a story could be considered great. What we need from you is to describe those reasons in detail.

What will the judges look for

Choice of story: the judges will be looking for an original choice of story. Everybody knows about Romeo and Juliet. Try to find something different, a lesser-known story. Your argument about why the story is great: the judges will want to know why you like this particular story. Is it because of its literary qualities, is it because it is a particularly good study of human character or social relations, or maybe because it describes love in an unusual way?

Quality of writing: make sure you write a piece that is engaging to the reader. It needs to have a good structure, contain lively language and rich vocabulary.

Quality of English: it should go without saying that the jurors will also judge the essay on how well it is written in the English language. Including, if the sentences are grammatically correct! 🙂

Examples of great love stories

Here are come examples of interesting love stories from various parts of the English-speaking world (UK, Ireland, US, Australia, New Zealand). You can choose to describe one these in your essay, or choose something completely different, it’s up to you.

  • O.Henry: The Gift of the Magi (short story)
  • Francis Scott Fitzgerald: The Last of the Belles (short story)
  • Robert Richardson: Annette (poem)
  • Aldous Huxley: The Gioconda Smile (short story)
  • Frank O’Connor: The Bridal Night (short story)
  • Katherine Mansfield: Mr. and Mrs. Dove (short story)
